Engine knocking at start-up

Question:

I still have an original engine in my 1500 Midget. I have
nearly clocked up 90,000 miles and there is a knocking
sound for a couple of seconds on start-up, although the oil
is light always out (apart from when starting up).

Answer:

The knocking sound is caused by a very slow build up of the oil pressure. It's quite typical for 1500 engine. On older models with a oil pressure gauge you can see that it takes up to 5 seconds to get the normal pressure when the oil is cold. It's important to be patient and let the engine build up enough pressure before driving away.

If the knocking gets excessive it's maybe time to check the oil pump. Also in cold winter climate it's better to change the oil for a thinner sort e.g. 10W40.
